আহ!
এই অসাধারণ বাক্যটি তাওগুরু লাওৎ -সে-র মুখের কথা।
লাওৎ -সে এর ব্যাপারে পরে আসছি। কিন্তু, তাও কি?
তাও যে কী-কেউ বলতে পারে না।
তাওবাদী গ্রন্থ তাও তে চিং এর প্রারম্ভেই বলা হয়েছে-

The Way that can be told of is not an unvarying way;
The names that can be named are not unvarying names.
It was from the Nameless that Heaven and Earth sprang;
The named is but the mother that rears the ten thousand creatures, each after its kind. (chap. 1, tr. Waley)

তারপরও তাও এর ধারনা গড়ে উঠেছিল প্রাচীন চিনে।এবং ধারনাটি গড়ে তুলেছিলেন লাওৎ -সে নামে প্রাচীন চিনের একজন প্রজ্ঞাবান মানুষ।লাওৎ -সে: অর্থ প্রবীন শিক্ষক। সম্ভবত সম্মানজনক উপাধী। কাজেই, লাওৎ -সে-ই ছিলেন তাওবাদের গুরু।
তাও তে চিং অর্থ কি?
তাও মানে পথ নীতি বা মতবাদ; তে মানে পূন্য;চিং মানে নিয়ম।
কাজেই, তাও তে চিং-এর বাংলা করা অর্থ করা যায় "পূন্য পথের নিয়ম।"
বইটি লিখেছেন লাওৎ -সে। তবে বিতর্ক আছে।
লাওৎ -সে-র জন্ম কারও কারও মতে যিশুর জন্মের ৬শ বছর আগে। কারও কারও মতে লাওৎ -সে একজন না অনেক। আবার কারও কারও মতে লাওৎ -সে হচ্ছে
পুরোটাই মিথ। আবার কারও কারও মতে ৬শ নয় তিনি বেঁচে ছিলেন যিশুর জন্মের ৪শ বছর আগে। যিশুর জন্মের ৪শ বছর আগের সময়টাকে চিনে বলা হয় "শত চিন্তাধারার যুগ"। আর রাজনৈতিক দিক দিয়ে ‍"যুদ্ধরত রাস্ট্রের যুগ"। সেই সময়ই বেঁচে ছিলেন লাওৎ -সে।
সিমা কিয়ান ছিলেন একজন বিখ্যাত চৈনিক ঐতিহাসিক । তিনি মনে করতেন যে, লাওৎ -সে ছিলেন কনফুসিয়াস- এর সমকালীন। এবং তাদের মধ্যে নাকি দেখাও হয়েছিল।
মনে করা হয় যে ছিলেন চৌ আমলের রাজকীয় গ্রন্থগারের কর্মকর্তা ছিলেন লাওৎ -সে। প্রথাগত শিক্ষা না থাকলেও অনেকেই ভিড় করেছিল ওই জ্ঞানীর পাশে। এমনটাতো হতেই পারে।
নৈতিক অধপতনে বিরক্ত হয়ে শেষ বয়েসে রাজ্য ছেড়ে চলে যান ষাঁড়ের পিঠে চড়ে। এমনটাতো হতেই পারে। তখনই নাকি তাঁর এক শিষ্য বলেছিল,'যাওয়ার আগে কিছু বলে যান গুরু।"
লাওৎ -সে যা বলেছিল তাই পরবর্তীকালে পরিচিত হয়েছিল তাও তে চিং নামে।
এমনটা হতে পারে। কেননা, তাও তে চিং ছোট বই। ৮১ টি সংক্ষিপ্ত অধ্যায় ও ৫০০০ শব্দ।
এককালে ইউরোপের জ্ঞানীগুণিরা সব হুমড়ি খেয়ে পড়েছিল অতটুকুন বইয়ের ওপর। To die but not to perish is to be eternally present. He who knows he has enough is rich.
বইটা পড়ে প্রাচীন চিনের উপর শ্রদ্ধা ভয়ানক বেড়ে গিয়েছিল।
তা কি আছে এতে?
তাও তে চিং -এ আছে অনেক রহস্যময় উক্তি। যেমন-

The Valley Spirit never dies
It is named the Mysterious Female.
And the doorway of the Mysterious Female
Is the base from which Heaven and Earth sprang.
It is there within us all the while;
Draw upon it as you will, it never runs dry. (chap. 6, tr. Waley)

আবার-
Tao the only motion is returning;
The only useful quality, weakness.
For though all creatures under heaven are the products of Being,
Being itself is the product of Not-being. " (chap. 40, tr. Waley)

আরও যেসব বিষয় রয়েছে-
* Force begets force.
* One whose needs are simple can fulfill them easily.
* Material wealth does not enrich the spirit.
* Self-absorption and self-importance are vain and self-destructive. (22, 24)
* Victory in war is not glorious and not to be celebrated, but stems from devastation, and is to be mourned.
* The harder one tries, the more resistance one creates for oneself.
* The more one acts in harmony with the universe (the Mother of the ten thousand things), the more one will achieve, with less effort.
* The truly wise make little of their own wisdom for the more they know, the more they realize how little they know.
* When we lose the fundamentals, we supplant them with increasingly inferior values which we pretend are the true values. (18)
* Glorification of wealth, power and beauty beget crime, envy and shame.
* The qualities of flexibility and suppleness, especially as exemplified by water, are superior to rigidity and strength. (8, 40, 55, 78)
* Everything is in its own time and place.
* Duality of nature that complements each other instead of competing with each other — the two faces of the same coin — one cannot exist without the other.
* The differences of opposite polarities — e.g., the differences between male and female, light and dark, strong and weak, etc. — help us to understand and appreciate the universe.
* Humility is the highest virtue.
* Knowing oneself is a virtue. (33)
* Envy is our calamity; overindulgence is our plight.
* The more you go in search of an answer, the less you will understand.
* Know when it's time to stop. If you don't know then stop when you are done. (9)
