আমি কিছুদিন আগে আমার বি.এস.সি (ইলেক্ট্রিক্যাল এন্ড ইলেক্ট্রনিক্স)শেয করেছি। এখন মাস্টার্স এর জন্য বিভিন্ন দেশে আবেদন করছি। এ জন্য আমাকে একটি মোটিভেশন লেটার লিখতে হবে। কিন্তু আমার কাছে কোন স্যাম্পল লেটার নেই।

যতটুকু জানি, এখানে অনেকেই আছেন, যারা দেশের বাইরে পড়াশোনা করছেন। তাদের কারও কাছে যদি কোন মোটিভেশন লেটার থেকে থাকে, তাহলে আমাকে পাঠালে আমি খুবই উপকৃত হব। বা কেউ যদি কোন পরামর্শ দেন কিভাবে লিখতে হবে, তাহলেও খুব ভাল হয়।

@নাম্বারহীন, সেটা আমার ব্যাপার। তারপরও আপনার জ্ঞাতার্থে জানাচ্ছি, আমার বি এস সি এর থিসিস দেশের বাইরের অনেক ইউনিভার্সিটি এপ্রিশিয়েট করে মেইল পাঠিয়েছে। আমাদের মত দেশে চিপ ডিজাইন নিয়ে এত বড় লেভেলের কাজ খুব একটি হয়নি। আর আপনার ভাষা, আচার-আচরণ সবকিছুই আপনার পরিবার, শিক্ষা-দীক্ষা কে উপস্থাপণ করে। কি দরকার অন্যকে নিজের সম্পর্কে খারাপ ধারনা দেয়ার?

মানুষ বলেই মানুষের কাছে সাহায্য চাওয়া যায়, সেটা ভিক্ষা হয় না। ভিক্ষুক মনে হয় তারাই, যারা কোথাও সুযোগ না পেয়ে সাহায্য করার বদলে অন্যকে বিপদে ফেলার জন্য ব্লগে ঘোরাঘোরি করে।

Admission into Master’s Degree in Computer Science and Communication Engineering

I am writing to you to apply for the Master's Degree in Computer Science and Communication Engineering in which I am particularly interested.
My aim is to work in an international field related to Information technology industry. Therefore I would like to gain a deeper theoretical knowledge in electrical engineering, computer science and communication networks. I believe university of Duisburg-Essen with an interdisciplinary Master degree course in Computer Science and Communication Engineering is the best place to achieve my career objectives.

I just completed bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Communication Engineering from the University of Duisburg-Essen with an average grade of 2,6. To further prepare myself for the program I completed a 3 month internship at Fraunhofer institute during my bachelor study. And I also worked a year and half at Etablissement NIC before my bachelor study. Thus I gained a valuable practical experience in computer maintenance, web development and network administration. I completed my bachelor thesis with a grade of 1,0 at Fraunhofer institute in microelectronic department. I also participate in a project at this same institute. I tremendously enjoyed my experience.

I would finally like to add some activities which have developed in me a permanent taste of competitiveness and also emphasized my organization skills. Since 2 years, I have been working voluntarily for IAESTE (International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience) under DAAD. I have recently become responsible of the organization of IAESTE University of Duisburg.

Of an exceptional motivation, I strongly imply myself in my academic activities to carry out my objectives. I passed all the courses offered in bachelor study during the first trial except one. I have a very strong desire to pursue a career in (something will come here later) ,

The ambitions which I have just exposed to you would not be realized without a solid theoretical background and a strong real world experience specialized in system analysis and conception of application systems in communication networks. I am deeply convinced that the interdisciplinary Master degree course that ISE Program offers is the best way of concretizing this future because of its international orientation, well structured and . As an ardent computer enthusiast, I would like to pursue a career starting with a Masters degree leading to Ph.D. in the field of Artificial Intelligence or High Performance Computing. My academic performance, brief exposure to research, tutoring opportunity and inquisitiveness led me to believe that I will thrive in the field I have mentioned above.

At present I am in the process of finishing writing my undergraduate thesis on the “Huffman Code” under the supervision of Professor M. Kaykobad. Arithmetic encryption and compression are now the most widely used techniques but the Huffman Code could achieve both simultaneously. I have proposed a new variant of the Huffman Code to be used for this purpose. However, the main problem with any Huffman Code is the huge overhead associated with sending the tree and symbols. Some excellent work has already been done to minimize bits associated with sending the tree by a good factor. I am exploring the properties of Huffman Tree for further minimization of bits. I am also researching towards using Huffman Coding in public-key cryptosystems. Though disproved later, an algorithm like Knapsack was used in public cryptography. So it might be possible that other algorithmic systems can be used for public-key cryptography as well.

During my undergraduate research I found that I had to spend most of the time studying Cryptography and Number Theory instead of conducting research. An in-depth knowledge in these subjects can only be gained by further studies in an intellectually stimulating environment. My short but intense experiences as a C/C++ course instructor and research experience have emboldened my aim to pursue career in academia/research. This is where I can quench my thirst in knowledge and help others to learn and educate at the same time.

During my undergraduate years at BUET, I was a leading member of a team that successfully carried out several course projects. We applied an innovative approach towards ALU design that used significantly fewer gates than generally required. We also implemented a Metal detector (first of its kind implemented in our department) dealing in digitizing frequency. I work with similar ease individually. Though I was more comfortable with Java at that time, I programmed in Visual C/C++ in a project to get myself well acquainted with its tools and environment, and hence enhance my skills.

Our department has a very competitive environment, so on and off campus we make an effort to excel our expertise. As a result I learned programming languages and environments like ASP, Visual Studio, HTML and Linux beyond the course requirements. I actively participated in programming contests and eagerly sought teaching jobs in the growing ICT field.

I had to utilize the limited resources available in the university to maximize the exposure and theoretical research was one of the best options that I could benefit at its maximum. I found theoretical work very challenging and stimulating, however, general algorithmic approaches have less potential for improving many real world problems. Artificial Intelligence, on the other hand, has many tools and technologies for solving real world problems very effectively. I have always been fascinated by the work in Artificial Intelligence. Besides the regular A. I. course, I also took a course in Pattern Recognition that emphasized on machine leraning approaches. I liked both courses very much. In the classes I implemented a generic Backpropagation algorithm using C++ and other elementary A.I. techniques such as  pruning and IDA* using prolog. I also read and synthesized a few papers on clustering algorithms and pruning techniques. I’m particularly interested in the area of data mining and its applications. I think, besides being an essential element of any scientific research, very soon every software and micro-controlled hardware will have A.I. capability – working according to the preference of user. University of Minnesota, Twin Cities has a history of pioneering A.I. research. Though yet an amateur, I have interest in pursuing projects involving Recommender Systems and data mining. I am following the development of some projects like GroupLens and Data Mining for Global Climate Modeling through the Internet.

I am also interested in High Performance Computing. UMN is conducting a massive pilot project for NII – NSF-CISE RI Program. This is the kind of opportunity I am looking forward to avail myself. All the projects or research activities that I have been familiar with involved few people and small resources. NSF-CISE RI Program, alternatively, is colossal and diverse and has a lot of offer. It will be a milestone in high performance distributed computing and build the basis for future implementations. Its success will make computing over network highly efficient. My analytical aptitude and leadership spirit will encourage me to excel in this highly structured and teamed environment.

Being from a developing nation, where may be only a few ever heard of UMN, my hopes and dreams may seem to be unrealistic. But I would like to point out that I am among the few privileged, women even less, of my nation who had the opportunity to come this far by tackling every hurdle. If I am given the opportunity to be a part of this excellent university, I would make the best out of it. I would take it as a responsibility to go an extra mile to do superior work and lead my research to success.

It is with sincere sense of gratification that I begin my statement of purpose. I look forward to pursue Ph.D. degree in computer science in the field of Computer Architecture or Embedded Systems from a world-class institution because not only it would allow me to expand my knowledge but also would give me the opportunity to obtain my eventual objective of taking up research-oriented career in this field.

During my undergraduate years at BUET, I was the leader of a team that successfully carried out several course projects. Among several software and hardware projects the one which reminds me of great pleasure and success is the design and implementation of an 8bit microprocessor using MSI and LSI chips, which could execute thirty x86 instructions with two stage pipelining facility. We applied an innovative approach towards the design of the processor that used significantly fewer gates than generally required. The completion of this project resulted great self-confidence and desire in me to pursue my graduate studies in Computer Architecture and Embedded Systems design, especially system level approach to low-power design, processor-memory integration, superscalar architecture, integrated design of controllers. Now I want to fulfill my dream by building a research based career in this field of study.

In my undergraduate thesis I worked with Prof. Abul Kashem Mia in the field of Graph Theory titled “An Approximation Algorithm for Finding Minimum Elimination Tree Height of a Graph”. It was the time when I started to understand how research activities should be carried out. When my thesis partner and I were wondering what to do, my thesis supervisor showed us the way. We started searching the web and the library for related topics, what has been done so far. We started perusing all relevant documents and devising ways to attack the problem from different positions, finding ins and outs and possible ways to solve the problem. Finally we made our way to success. This achievement inspired me to do further research activities in the field of my interest.

Our department has a very competitive environment, so on and off campus students make an effort to excel their expertise. As a result I learned programming languages and environments like ASP, Visual Studio, HTML, PHP and Linux beyond the course requirements. I actively participated in programming contests, which is a regular event in BUET to enhance the programming skills of the students. While I was an undergraduate student in BUET, I served twice as a course tutor for the students without IT background and taught them Java. This experience stimulated and inspired me to delve Java deeper. As a result I learned J2ME (Java Micro Edition) and developed some applications, games for mobile phones. Performing research in Embedded Systems is also of my interest and this experience interested me to do something novel in this field of study. Development of high performance embedded, wired and wireless, real-time system is a big research issue. Recent advancement in cellular phones, Bluetooth wireless technology and electronic gadgets in everyday life has brought embedded technology under the spotlight. Low-power design of integrated controllers, developing efficient compilers to generate reduced size codes for these environments, which have very limited resources, is of great interest to me.

I have gone through the website of several engineering schools in search of research in computer architecture and embedded systems, my passion. Finally I found what I was looking for at the University of Illinois. I have thoroughly browsed the website of research areas and the research scope of 4-PEAKS project under the supervision of Prof. Sairta V. Adve interested me most. This is the kind of opportunity I am looking forward to avail myself. These programs seemed to me colossal, diverse and have a lot of offer. These websites also revealed a very strong faculty involved in extensive research in the area of Computer Architecture and Embedded Systems. This has strengthened my resolve to study at UIUC.

In my life I never wanted to be someone, rather I always wanted to do something. Doing something meant different things in different stages of my life. In secondary level it meant securing top positions in every aspect of a student’s life including games, sports and other extra curricular activities. After that it meant getting admission in the best institution of my country and then proving my academic excellence. Now I am serving as a lecturer at BRAC University which is a leading private university in Bangladesh. After being successful in all of these stages, now I want to fulfill my desire by doing something original and novel in the broader field of computer science. That is why I want to be a part of the superior research activities at the University of Illinois. My personal interest, academic performance, brief exposure to research, tutoring opportunity and inquisitiveness led me to believe that it would give me the ultimate opportunity to build a research based career.

It is fortunate that I am doing it now when I need to introduce myself. I have completed my undergraduate studies in Computer Science from North South University (NSU) a top rated private university in Bangladesh. Childhood passion for programming led my way through Computer Science studies and at the end of this joyous journey the revelation is that pursuing further education and research is a must for me. I want to go to graduate school for masters and then do a PhD in computer science.

I can still remember I enjoyed most all my undergrad computer science and mathematics courses. One reason is that, since childhood I am very interested in mathematics and science. Another reason is that computer is interesting to me. I love doing mathematics that is computation. I enjoy reading scientific theory, understanding logical explanation. The many exciting features of computer science during my undergrad intrigues me to research in the various fields of Computer Science, like computer architecture, computer networks and communication protocols, parallel processing, algorithms and so on.

I have a long cherished desire to pursue my career as a successful teacher since this is the only profession in my country, which provides the exact support for research and the scope to enjoy a leadership of hundreds of bright youngsters. Just after my graduation I worked as a teaching assistant in the Department of Computer Science at NSU. Then I joined BRAC University (BU), a flourishing university in Bangladesh, as a lecturer in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. I love teaching students, making them understood any complex and critical point in the simplest way. Currently, I am teaching programming language, discrete mathematics, and algorithms in BU. There are other courses like computer architecture, operating systems, parallel computing, compilers, networks, and artificial intelligence offered for senior level students each semester. For me, teaching one of those courses more effectively and interestingly, I decide research in computer science is must. Imperial College is a leading and well-reputed one in the fields of Computer Science. It is renowned for its excellent graduate program in Computer Science and prominent research facilities. It will be a tremendous opportunity to be able to participate in the pioneering research conducted by Computer Science faculty of this university.

I am delighted when visits web pages of computing department at Imperial College. The logic and artificial research area at Imperial College is very exciting. Logic programming extensions, knowledge representation formalisms, automated reasoning and the theory and application of classical and non-classical logic research area is very interesting. D.R. Brough’s research interests in knowledge based tools to enhance learning and teaching, self-paced learning using multiple media and web, artificial intelligence to augment human intelligence seems very interesting and challenging to me.

My undergraduate years were a juggling act between studies and professional development. I found myself obsessing over programming way too much. My obsession led me to development efforts ranging from low-level utilities to optimization problems to database projects. I dabbled in fields that sounded interesting to me. I was in a race against myself. I fed off challenging problems like a junky. I was intuitive when it came to programming. I took extreme pride in my work. I always tried to write efficient programs. I developed solutions using space-time tradeoffs.

The software process research area in Imperial College is also very interesting to me. During my undergrad I had two courses in software engineering where software project management and how to develop a mature software process was the focus of the courses. In my undergrad course CSC482 (Internet and web technology) in NSU, 50% of the course grade was for reviewing various research papers of various computer science departments in United States, United kingdom and for suggesting a new problem and solution on topics like Internet protocols, caching of dynamic data, server load reduction, distributed servers, wireless networks and so on. My final undergrad project paper was titled, “A networked platform of telemedical services for diagnosis of remote cardiac patient.” In my paper, I proposed a network infrastructure where cardiac patients, with a mobile E.C.G. transmitter, by getting immediate assistance from respective doctor who is receiving patient’s E.C.G. images via some mobile device (i.e., PDA, cellular phone) at any time from any location, can avoid future possible heart attack.

The artificial intelligence and man-machine interaction research area at Imperial College are also interesting to me. I find myself going back to the basics, becoming more and more interested in theoretical concepts. I can claim no formal philosophical training yet I think about the nature of consciousness, awareness and intelligence. I have looked at the theory and application of multivalued logic and I understand the concept of ‘smarter machines’. I question modeling machine intelligence on our own logical reasoning. Perhaps it is an impossible dream of modeling consciousness and awareness in a machine, or for a machine to ever have true purpose. Our present physical understanding of the brain gives us no clue to deciphering the mysteries of the mind. As a disciple of science I cannot attribute the unknown to mysticism. There is the mind-brain debate, cognition vs. connection modeling. These are broad issues with no concrete solutions as of yet. The fact remains that the field of computing has not eliminated philosophy. I feel technological progress has but given people something black and white to work with while hiding the grayness in between. I have come a full circle from application development to interest in theoretical research.

I earnestly want to be a part of the great research teams of computing department at Imperial College and it is my strong conviction that I have all the potentials to contribute to the research of this university. I am confident that I have the necessary motivation for research work and academic background to pursue successful graduate study. I also believe that the distinguished research program of this university will provide an excellent base for me to become a leading researcher in my field of specialization.

comment by: আমি কে বলেছেন: It is with sincere sense of gratification that I begin my statement of purpose. I am studying ----. I graduated from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and achieved my BSc degree in --- in November 2004. I look forward to pursue research based education in materials from a world-class institution because not only it would allow me to expand my knowledge but also would give me the opportunity to access to sophisticated research facilities.

During my undergraduate studies, the courses, which attracted me first, were the crystallography, phase diagrams and thermodynamics courses. However, the interest towards materials and metallurgy was flourished during my study of the corrosion, crystal defects, physical metallurgy, heat treatment, polymers and composites and ceramics courses. These technology-oriented courses together with other courses encouraged me towards materials. The department of my undergraduate study has a very competitive environment, so most of the students make an effort to excel their expertise. One such course was on materials processing plant design in the fourth year. I was the leader of a group that successfully carried out the given task of design of a foundry for the production of insulator cap. The hard job was to estimate the feasibility of installation of such a plant in Bangladesh. I also enjoyed one month industrial training in a steel mill arranged by the department. Except my departmental courses, I liked the mechanics courses very much.

My undergraduate thesis was on polymer composites. It was the time when I started to understand how research activities should be carried out. We (I had one colleague in that project) started searching the web and the library for related topics, what has been done so far. We started perusing all relevant documents and devising possible ways to solve the problem. Finally, we made our way to success. This achievement inspired me to do further research activities. I would like to add that I am the author of a paper based on my thesis work, published in the proceedings of 4th International Mechanical Engineering Conference & 9th Annual Paper Meet, 29-31 December 2004, Dhaka, Bangladesh pp ---. Another paper is currently under review for the Journal of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.

All these things jointly (like attending conference, writing papers) have enhanced my interest in materials. I have come to -- for higher study in materials. The theory part of the MSc course is modifying my knowledge in materials. My MSc project is on modelling of phase formation of aluminium alloy piston castings. I am using thermodynamic software (MTDATA and JMatPro) to predict phase fractions against temperature and then they will be compared with the experimental results to find out any shortcomings of the modelling. I have completed the literature review and I am really excited about this project.

Now I want to satisfy myself with the detailed knowledge of materials through further research activity focused on a particular topic, which will steer me towards the building of my career.

I have seen in --- website about this research proposal. I admit, till now, I did not get the chance to have any nanotechnology course in my undergraduate and MSc programme. But, with my background in materials, I hope this will not be too hard to understand a new materials related topic. Also, a new type of opportunity is always challenging. And, I would really love to face this challenge.

I know that my undergraduate cumulative G.P.A. is not excellent. However, I hope from the deep of my heart that this will not be the main obstacle to continue my education and to achieve my aim of getting a place in the vast research field of materials. Moreover, in my first semester in The University of Manchester, I performed quite well.

In my life I never wanted to be someone, rather I always wanted to do something. Doing something meant different things in different stages of my life. In secondary school level, it meant securing better positions in every aspect of a student’s life including sports and other extra curricular activities. After that it meant getting admission in the best institution of my country and then proving my academic excellence. Thereafter I tried to go outside my country for higher education and I also succeeded. After being mostly successful in all of these stages, now I want to fulfil my desire by doing something original and novel in the broader field of materials. That is why I want to be a part of the activities at the University of Sheffield. My personal interest, academic performance, brief exposure to research and inquisitiveness lead me to believe that it would give me the ultimate opportunity to build a research based career in materials.
