শূকর নামক প্রাণীটি ইদানিং বিশ্ব খবরে বেশ উঠে এসেছে শোয়াইন ফ্লুর বদৌলতে।
গ্লোবাল ভয়েস অনলাইনে এই শোয়াইন ফ্লু সম্পর্কিত একখানা পোষ্টের বাংলা করন প্রয়াসের সময় সেই আর্টিকেলটির হেডিংখানা দৃষ্টি হতে প্রবিষ্ট হয়ে মস্তিষ্কে অনুরণণ এর চেষ্টা চালায়।
হেডিং টা সেই শূকর শব্দটি সংযুক্ত বিধায় শুরুটা আমার শূকর দিয়েই করতে হলো।
হেডিং খানা ছিল-- যখন শূকর ওড়ে !
যার প্রকৃত বাক্যটি আসলে ইংরেজী করলে যা দাঁড়ায় সেরূপ মানে হোয়েন পিগস ফ্লাই(when pigs fly)। এটি খুব প্রচলিত একটা প্রবাদ ধরনের বাক্য।
আসলে শূকর( pigs ) একটা থলথলে মাংসল ভারী প্রাণী যার পাখা নেই তাই শূকরের পক্ষে ওড়া সম্ভব নয়।
তাই এই এই প্রবাদীয় বাক্যটির দ্বারা আসলে কৌতূক করে প্রকাশ করা হয় এমন কিছু যা কেই কখনও করতে পারবে না বা এমনকিছু যা কখনও ঘটবে না।
উদাহরণ সরূপ বলতে গেলে যদি প্রশ্ন করা হয় --তুমি কি মনে কর তুমি এই কোমপানীতে কখনও আর চাকুরী করবে না?
যদি উত্তরদাতা চাকুরী না করার বিষয়ে এতটাই ডিটারমাইন্ড হয় তাহলে উত্তর দিতে পারে সংক্ষেপে এই বলে --হোয়েন পিগস ফ্লাই।
আবার এমন হতে পারে যখন বারবার অসফলতার জন্য বিখ্যাত এমন কেউ শেষপর্যন্ত যদি সফল হয় তখন কোন পর্যবেক্ষক কৌতূক করে তার দিকে নির্দেশ করে বলতে পারে--দেখ! একটা উড়ন্ত শূকর("Hey look! A flying pig!")
শূকর সম্ভবত প্রথম উড়েছিল মানে এই প্রবাদটির অর্থ মিথ্যে প্রামাণিত হয়েছিল ১৯০৯ সালে যখন বৃটিশ এভিয়েশণ উদ্ভাবনের হোতা লর্ড ব্যারাবজন প্রথম জীবন্ত এয়ার কারগো তৈরী করেছিলেন একটি শূকরকে বাস্কেটে ভরে তার বিমানের পাখার সাথে লাগিয়ে দিয়েছিল। এয়ার উড়েছিল শূকরও তাহলে উড়েছিল।
এই প্রবাদটি কয়েকশত বছরের পুরানো একটি স্কটিশ প্রবাদ থেকে মূলত নেয়া হয়েছে। যার প্রমাণ এর জন্য আমরা বলতে পারি লুইস ক্যারোরের বিখ্যাত বই ’ এলিস ইন ওয়ান্ডারল্যান্ড ’ এ এর ব্যবহার।
যেখানে আমরা দেখি--
"Thinking again?" the Duchess asked, with another dig of her sharp little chin.
"I've a right to think," said Alice sharply, for she was beginning to feel a little worried.

এই ব্যবহারটিই সম্ভবত ব্যাপকভাবে এই প্রবাদটির অর্থ ‘নেভার’(‘never’ ) মানে `কখনও না' প্রকাশ করেছে।

বাংলায় এটার একটা সমার্থক প্রবাদ হলো “যখন সূর্য পশ্চিম দিকে উঠবে”
