Effective initiatives should be adapted to continue the verdict of the court regarding ban on tobacco farming in Hill tracts of Bandarban and removal of all the chimneys from the area. Speakers demanded the ban at a demo organized by Bangladesh Tamak Birodhi Jote (BATA) in front of National press club at 11.00 am in the morning today
The speakers in the demo said that tobacco companies are selecting new areas fro tobacco farming as tobacco farming reduces fertility and crop production. Tobacco companies have been shifting tobacco farming areas in Hill tracts and other fertile areas of the country. We have food shortage and tobacco farming in crop producing land will threaten food security.
The speakers further said that deforestation is resulted for tobacco farming. Tobacco companies are fulfilling their need by cutting down trees from the forests of Hill tracts. As a result, natural calamities occur and wild life is endangered.
The speakers said that tobacco farming requires more pesticides. Tobacco companies are preferring river bank for curing tobacco. So, the pesticides used in tobacco get mingled with river water and it razes fishes and other water lives.
The speakers further said that the verdict of the court should be continued in high court because tobacco is not only harmful for health; it is harmful for economy and environment as well. Tobacco farming in agro land should be banned for the sake of our country.
Helal Ahmed, secretary general of Prottyasha anti-drugs club, A M Muhudul Islam, vice-president of National Non-smokers’ Forum, Abul Hasan, founder of Bangladesh Joint Workers’ Federation, Abu Hanif Sarkar of Panchahat, Hasinur Rahman, executive director of BAUKS, Mizanur Rahman Ripon of WEAP, Shahinur Begum of UBINIG, M Rafiqul Islam Milon, Secretary (Program), Bangladesh Tamak Birodhi Jote (BATA), S M Saikat, Executive Director of SERAC Bangladesh, Yusuf Akand Mujib of SEEBA Foundation, Md. Kamal Hossain Executive Director of SDO, Syada Anonna Rahman of WBB Trust, A K M Khalilullah, public relation officer of NATAB and officials of many organizations of Bangladesh Tamak Birodhi Jote (BATA) were present in the program. The program was moderated by Ibnul Syed Rana, chairman of Nirapad Development Foundation.
