the chittagong landslide tragedy and the blog as a campaign site

this post aims at sharing some ideas with you that i hope will engage you also in a positive discussion about how you want to see this blog, and ask for your input about how we can bring our contribution to the society through badh bhangar aawaj. the first thing on my mind is how the blog community could mobilize in a tragic situation like the chittagong land slide. for prapti, you did such a great mobilization that it was noticed by global voices and other blogs around the world.
when i saw the news last night, i felt so helpless and wanted to do something for the victims. i am sure that all of you felt the same. the landslide victims that had lost their dear ones and their houses and need assistance to give them shelter or food.
how many bloggers do we have in chittagong? can we have local bloggers reporting and sharing information with us? can bloggers of chittagong unite and start a campaign? mobilize people to share food and clothes with the victims? take your blog posts to the press, suggest direct action, be there and participate for help and report back from the disaster area what is going on. i think we can. perhaps we are not strong enough now, and we don´t have the technical setup yet for a campaign site, but we will scan through the blog and collect any good posts about the disaster in a separate area of the front page, as we did with the prapti post. therafter we will gradually follow up with tools which makes it easier to start a good civil campaign and let these be seen and heard!
this is the potential power of our blog community, and this is a cause to unite for! come on bloggers, lets unite for a campaign and participate with coverage and help. somewhere in… send a person to chittagong to help from our side, providing food and clothes as far as we can.
there is no lack of engagement and campaigning among you guys, when it comes to debating posts deleted and not deleted. we acknowledge that you are giving somewhere in… blog some pretty bad blows these days in discontent, and that we have to engage ourselves more to repair the ship. you are proud bangladeshi´s, so are we, even me! we take great pride in the blog community, and we strongly believe that this ship can sail the seven seas and be noticed and admired wherever it goes. come on, lets repair the sails and the ship, bring back the spirit, and set out for a long journey together towards the youniverse!

But now residing at dhaka. i got calls from home yesterday, i was told that our area was flooded and the people from nearby slums took shelter in different houses, even ours. my deep condolance for the affected and i am really keen to involve in the campaign.. thanks a lot for yr post.

The people is in grief for the landslide. What I can do from my pocket is to spend 50 taka out of 100 at the moment for them. Besides, I can spend millions of words for them. I can raise my voices to tell the government to arrest those who destroyed the hills and made it vulnerable for the landslide.

জ্বিনের বাদশার আইডিয়্যাগুলো পছন্দ হয়েছে। সাথে আরো কিছু যুক্ত করি:১) সামহোয়্যারের সকল ব্লগার টাকা জমা দিতে পারেন একটি নির্দষ্ট একাউন্টে। তারপর সেই টাকা আমাদের চট্রগ্রামের ব্লগার জুয়েল ভাই ও ওয়াহিদ (সমুদ্রের উত্তাল তরঙ্গ)-এর কাছে পাঠানো যায়। কেউ আগ্রহী হলে ঢাকা থেকে চট্রগাম যেতে পারেন সাহায্য নিজ হাতে পৌছে দেয়ার জন্য। আমি এখন কিছুটা ফ্রি আছি। যেতে আপত্তি নেই।

In this crysis we should do as much as possible for those people. Raising fund would be the best policy for this very moment, but we have to do that quick. Otherwise it won't do them any help.

here is an update of what we want to do in chittagong:1) we didn´t find a safe way to get our people to chittagong tonight. me and rahil will get ourselves down to chittagong anyhow tomorrow, and we plan to stay there until friday.
2) if the road is clear, we may send two more people with our car on thursday morning. if any dhaka bloggers wants to join, we may accommodate another two persons.
if anyone wants to donate used clothes suitable for the victims (dont forget sizes for the small children), they may bring these clothes to our somewhere in... office located at 3rd floor, house no 18, road no 24, gulshan from 8am to 7pm. if you go from gulshan 1 towards gulshan 2, just when you pass aspargus restaurant and golden rice restaurant on right hand side, there is a road in between shajalal bank and ncc bank. we are just on the next corner, opposite the chalet hotel.
3) we want to meet the chittagong bloggers, we have your numbers i believe, so we will call you on arrival. can you help us with advice where to go to survey, meet people and find out how we best can help?
4) we cannot receive donations to our somewhere in... account, but we hope that if we get a solution for receiving money somewhere, we can try to give a few families in desperate need a chance to rebuild their homes, get someone that cares for them through their trauma, and get help to get back to making a daily livelihood/income. we probably feel that our role would fit better to help someone to sustain over time, rather than being among those who provide lots of help in short time and then forget. the beauty of the blog is to keep issues alive and follow up.
5) how does the blog community, especially you in chittagong, feel that our help should be concentrated? we have mobilised support from adcomm and grameenphone today, at least got grameenphone to move on this issue themselves and they want also to be with us. we should be able to mobilise some more companies to support our efforts. do you feel best with instant help to many or sustained help to a few? we are small, but we may touch lives? what is the best way forward? do you agree with point 4)?
6) some good posts coming in, it seems, from chittagong. i encourage the bloggers to gradually start focusing on the reasons behind these accidents, cutting of hills and environmental damage, so that the blog can be a place where such crime against our own people and our childrens future is highlighted.

আচ্ছা, কোনো একাউন্ট নাম্বার নেই যেখানে সাহায্যের টাকা জমা দেয়া যাবে? কেউ কেউ তো প্রকাশ্যে সাহায্য করতে নাও চাইতে পারে, না চাইতে পারে তার পরিচয় কেউ জানুক। তাই না? যদি এমন কোনো অনলাইন একাউন্ট নাম্বার থাকে যেখানে বাংলাদেশের যে কোনো জায়গা থেকে টাকা জমা করা যাবে তবে প্লিজ তাড়াতাড়ি জানাবেন। যারা প্রত্যক্ষভাবে চট্টগ্রামকে এই বিপর্যয়ে সাহায্য করছেন তাদের কারো একাউন্ট দিলেও উপকার হতো। ধন্যবাদ সবাইকে।
