The Word “Hikmah”
I came across a peculiar/funny books written in Bengali called “Is Hadith Wahi of Allah_What does Quran Say” by Muhammad Iqbal Bin Fakhrul. The writer gives misinterpretation of some Quranic verses and perhaps do not know the difference between Revelation and Inspiration. If anyone interested can read his argument and judge by yourself.
Due to the fact that there is no mention of “Sunnah of Muhammad (s), the follower of hadith/Sunnah found it necessary to manipulate Quranic verse to support their claim from Quran. To do this, they often quote the following verse…
“And whoever does that has certainly wronged himself. And do not take the verses of Allah in jest. And remember the favor of Allah upon you and what has been revealed to you of the Book (Al Kitab) and wisdom (Al Hikmah) by which He instructs you” (2:231)
Nothing to say more about it. Anybody can check with the Arabic dictionary that the word “Hikmah” means Wisdom/Knowledge and the word “KITAB” means Book. But Mullah often says, by saying Hikmah, Allah made us understand the Sunnah of Prophet. This is an invalid claim because…
1. The only Sunnah is the Sunnah of Allah, as Allah mention in Quran (33:62, 35:43 and 48:23)
[This is] the established way of Allah which has occurred before. And never will you find in the way of Allah any change (48:23)
2. The only revelation is the Quran (6:19)
Say, "What thing is greatest in testimony?" Say, " Allah is witness between me and you. And this Qur'an was revealed to me that I may warn you thereby and whomever it reaches. Do you [truly] testify that with Allah there are other deities?" Say, "I will not testify [with you]." Say, "Indeed, He is but one God, and indeed, I am free of what you associate [with Him]." (6:19)
3. The same word ‘Al-Hikmah’ is used in the Quran in connection with prophets and messengers who lived before the time of Muhammad. Obviously before Muhammad lived his Sunna did not exist. Thus to say that ‘Al-Hikmah’ means the Sunna of Muhammad is incorrect. Consider the following verses:
a- The following are God’s words to Jesus: "And I taught you the ‘Kitab’ (Scripture) and ‘Al-Hikmah’(wisdom)." 5:110. Clearly the word ‘Al-Hikmah’ here does not mean the Sunna of Muhammad.
b- The following were the words of Abraham as he implored his Lord: "Our Lord, and send for them a messenger from among them to recite to them your ‘Ayat’ and teach them the ‘Kitab’ (Scripture) and ‘Al-Hikmah’ (wisdom)." 2:129. Again the word ‘Al-Hikmah’ here could not mean anything but wisdom. Abraham had no knowledge of the ‘Sunna’ of Muhammad.
A Warning to the Prophet Muhammad (s):
Allah also warned Prophet Muhammad (s) not to teach any law beside Him by mentioning the following verse:
"It (the Quran) is a revelation from the Lord of the universe. Had he (Muhammad) uttered any other teachings, We would have grabbed him by the right, and We would have severed his Wateen (Major artery of the heart), none of you could have helped him." (69:43-47)
Since the proof from Quran is sufficient enough that only revelation received by the prophet is Quran, we will examine what the hadith says about themselves: (Though it is unnecessary to Quote any Hadith to prove our point, we need to see what the hadith literature says about itself regarding its existence)
1. "Do not write down anything of me except the Quran. Whoever writes other than that should delete it" (Ahmed, Vol. 1, page 171.....also Sahih Muslim, Book 42, Number 7147)
2. Abu huraira said that the prophet said, "The 'Ummam' (nations/peoples) that preceded you have gone astray when they wrote books and upheld them besides God's scripture" (Ahmed Ibn Hanbal).
3. "Abu Huraira said: The messenger of God came to us while we were writing his sayings and said: "What is it you are writing?" we said "sayings (hadith) we hear from you messenger of God" he said, "A book other than God's book?" then Abu Huraira said, "so we gathered what we had written and burnt it all" (Taqyeed Al-Ilm, by Al-Khateeb Al-Baghdady) also (Oloom Al-Hadith, by Ibn Salah).
The hadith was not written/compiled in the life of Prophet (s) as he strongly forbade it do so. So why the prophet did make such order if it were also a form of revelation? One can argue that the prophet might thought that there might chance his hadith may mixed with the Quran, and therefore he forbade it to do so. But this argument is very naïve. Because Allah promises to guard His book from corruption. So, how the prophet feared of mixing his verses with Quran? Did not he believe Allah’s promise?
Some facts of hadith:
1. There was no writing of hadith in the Prophet’s life time
2. There was no writing of Hadith in the region of rightly guarded four Khalifa
3. The collection of hadith started taking place after 200/250 years of our beloved prophet’s demise
4. All the so called Imams who collected and compiled hadith are from Persia, not Arab
5. The hadith contradicts with Quran
6. The hadith contradicts with other Hadith
7. The hadith contradicts with other hadith of the same book
8. The oral transmission system of collecting hadith is not reliable. One can check of this reality by his own with his two or three friends.
A Final Word:
Allah mention in Quran
Then do they not reflect upon the Qur'an? If it had been from [any] other than Allah , they would have found within it much contradiction (4:82).
Since numerous contradictions ae present in the hadith literature, we only show one example to show the reader how it contradicts and why it is not from Allah.
The contradiction regarding the last sermon of Muhammad (s)
Here are the references to the three versions of the Last Sermon, you are requested to kindly read those from the Books of Hadiths mentioned below to understand how Muslims were made to get confused
1) I leave with you Quran and Sunnah, Muwatta, 46/3
2) I leave with you Quran and Ahl al-bayt , Muslim 44/4, Nu2408; ibn Hanbal 4/366; Darimi 23/1, nu 3319.
3) I leave for you the Quran alone you shall uphold it.
Muslim 15/19, nu 1218; ibn Majah 25/84, Abu dawud 11/56.
See Sahih Muslim, Book of Hajj, Book 7 , Number 2803:
So, one can easily understand the difficulty of understand it. In all statement, Quran is common. With Quran, we find Sunnah or Ahl al-bayt.
Conclusion:
1. There is never a second source of Law/Deen/Religion in Islam
2. Only Source is the Quran
3. There is no mention of hadith/Sunnah of prophet in the Quran
4. Allah repeatedly mention to follow the Quran alone
To remind some Quranic verse ….
"Say (O Muhammad), "What is the greatest testimony?" Say, "God is witness between me and you that this Quran has been inspired to me to warn you with it and whomever it reaches." 6:19
These are the verses of Allah which We recite to you in truth. Then in what statement after Allah and His verses will they believe? (45:6)
