1. First assess your English Language speaking, listening, reading and writing abilities and determine where you lack and what you need to do. Now do the following:
2. Let me assume that you read or used to read English novels translated in Bengali for example, western, or Kishor Classic etc. Now find the English version of your favorite novel and read it thoroughly.
Look into the dictionary for words meanings. For example, you can try the English novel Count Dracula by Bram Stoker. You already know the story, so it would be a lot easier for you to understand it. And more importantly, you’ll enjoy it! And soon you’ll see how you are improving. Same goes when reading English dailies. First go for the Bengali newspaper and then go for the English version. That way, you’ll learn it quicker.
3. At your leisure, watch English Movies, Discovery Channel, or Hindi programs that use English Language. Nothing could be more efficient way of learning if it is pleasure oriented. So, listen to good songs; download their lyrics from internet and try to read the lyrics in equal pace while listening songs. You can listen to Lobo, John Denver, Abba, Radio head, REM, Linking Park, Nirvana, Limp Bizkit or even Slipknot, but you need to understand the lyrics. You need to search internet for song meanings. The more you will do this the more you’ll learn, and of course as long as you love to do this.
4. Now about IELTS, you need to learn both British, Australian accents of speaking English. So, watch TV programs or movies of those countries as well.
5. Two books that could be really helpful to get better understanding of English are a. ‘English Grammar in Use’ by Raymond Murphy and b. ‘English for Bengali Learners’ by Harunur Rashid (Professor, JU.)
6. Start reading the IELTS preparation books provided by Cambridge and complete all the exercises. Do not pay much care about how you are doing. Just keep doing it and try to find where you are lacking.
7. Last but not the least, if you have failed to improve your English during your 12, 16 or 17 years of study then little chances are there that it will improve just if you prepare for three months, no matter what guarantee those organizations give. They may come into help but it is really you who can only help yourself in this regard. An inspiring example can help or motivate you in this regard. Have you ever thought how a child can learn a language within five years of its birth but then he/she fails to learn another language even with studying for 12 or more years? Well, in simple words, our brain has a valve when it is about learning. It opens itself when a person really tries to learn something, or he/she needs to learn it for survival. But once he/she has acquired some knowledge his/her longing or desire for learning gradually lessens and the valve slowly closes itself. It can only be reopened if the intense desire like that of a child to learn a language is risen in you. In that case, three months will be long enough to improve your English to a great degree, since you already know some.
8. You need to love a language to learn it. And should practice it with others. So, do that as frequently as you can. Interact with others in English. Immerse yourself in English.
9. Now you’re done. If you’re capable of scoring 5.0 before doing all this, then you would get 6.0. If you’re capable of scoring 5.5 then you would get 6.5. This is my guarantee. That is how I got 7.0 in IELTS without taking any coaching or enrolling myself into any other organization. Best of luck.
