The October 28 lawlessness was created by Awami League led grand alliance paving the way for 1/11, said speakers at a roundtable in the city.

They demanded exemplary punishment of those responsible for the killings on the day through a neutral investigation to ensure free, fair and transparent trial. If the trial of the killing does not take place, similar incidents might repeat in the country in future, they said.

The roundtable ‘Tragedy of October 28: Lessons and Responsibility in Politics’, organised by Chirantatan Bangladesh Foundation at the National Press Club marking the third anniversary of October 28 killing in 2006 was presided over by Dr. Mustafizur Rahman, president of the organisation.

The roundtable was participated among others, by BNP leader Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, opposition chief whip in the parliament Joynal Abedin Faruk, assistant secretary general of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Abdul Kader Mollah, president of Jatiya Gonotantrik Party Shafiul Alam Prodhan, former information secretary Barrister Haidar Ali, general secretary of Bangladesh Jatiya Party Abu Naser Mohammad Rahmatullah and general secretary of Islami Oikkya Jote Moulana Abdul Latif Nejami.

Khandaker Mosharraf said that October 28 incident was created by the vested quarters to implement the agenda of other countries and giving corridor to India in the name of Asian Highway and paving way for India to proceed with multi-million dollar Tipaimukh Dam construction.

He stressed the need for unity among the nationalist and Islamic forces taking lessons from the incident of October 28.

Joynal Abedin Faruk said that the government which assumed power on 1/11 did not hold trial of those responsible for creating anarchy on October 28 which proved that 1/11 was the outcome of the incident.

Criticising the withdrawal of the case of October 28, he said that the present government was an extension of 1/11 government.

Describing the October 28 incident as the worst brutal incident in the history of the country, Abdul Kader Mollah said the trial of the incident has to be ensured, otherwise the people would one day hold the trial.

Criticising the then state minister for Home Lutfuzzmaan Babar, he said the state minister for home was silent when the brutal incident took place at city’s Platan.

Barrister Haider Ali emphasised the need for united resistance against the conspiracy against the country. He said there was a conspiracy at home and abroad to turn the country into a failed state.
