The human chain was formed in front of the Fine Arts Institute of Dhaka University demanding preservation of the city’s canals including the Dumni canal, Atir Khal and Hikker Khal.

Abu Naser Khan said that the capital would be unsuitable for living within few years if the extinct canals of the city could not be preserved as soon as possible.
Blaming that now the concern authority is constructing road on the canals by building box-culvert in the name of renovation, he said that it is not proper way for preserving the canals and it is also a kind of grabbing.
The speakers said that water logging during rainy season is created due to the filling up of the canals in the name of so called urbanization adding that there were 43 canals in the country during pre-liberation period. The canals are being narrowing day be day, they added.
