‘If the Government does not impose ban on face-book, an internet-based social network, and does not make protest against the cartoon on Prophet Mohammad (sm) by Swedish cartoonist, Islami Oikkya Jote (IOJ) will observe countrywide hartal on June 28.’
IOJ Chairman Mufti Fazlul Haque Amini made the announcement at a demonstration at Muktangan in the city, organised by IOJ demanding ban on cartoon competition on Prophet Mohammad (sm), stopping Swedish embassy to Dhaka and imposing ban on face-book.
Calling upon the political parties of the country, including Awami League and BNP, to bring out procession in the street in protest of the cartoon, Mufti Amini said that making protest against all efforts which violate the sanctity of Prophet is a responsibility of every Muslim.
He called upon the Government to take initiatives to withdraw the Swedish embassy to Bangladesh.
Presided over by IOJ city unit president Maulana Abul Qasem, the programme was addressed, among others, by IOJ general secretary Maulana Abdul Latif Nejami, its joint secretary Mufti Mohammad Tayeb, its central leaders Maulana Md Lukman Uddin and Mufti Md Foyzullah.
The speakers demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the Swedish cartoonist who made cartoon on prophet. They also demanded ban on cartoon competition on prophet in face-book.
After the demonstration, a procession was brought out which paraded the different roads of the city.
Meanwhile, Sammilito Ulama Mashayekh Committee brought out a procession from Baitul Mokarram National Mosque after Asr prayer protesting cartoon in the face-book and cartoon competition.
Led by president of the committee and Editor of the Monthly Madina Maulana Muhiuddin Khan, the procession ended in front of the National Press Club when police stopped the procession there.
At the time, a protest meeting was held with Muhiuddin Khan in the chair while it was addressed, among others, by president of Bangladesh Masjid Mission Maulana Joynul Abedin, its general secretary Dr Maulana Khalilur Rahman Al-Madani and Maulana Abul Hasanat Abdul Halim.
Saying that the Swedish cartoonist hits soul of all Muslims of the world drawing cartoon on Prophet Mohammad, the speakers called upon the Government to make protest against the cartoon as a Muslim country.
They demanded arrest and exemplary punishment of the cartoonist.
On the other hand, Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) announced that it will lay siege around the Swedish embassy to Dhaka if the government does not make protest against the cartoon.
IAB made the announcement at a protest meeting at its office in the city with its city unit president Maulana ATM Hemayet Uddin in the chair.
President of Amra Dhakabasi Alhajj Mohammad Shamsul Haque, its general secretary Mohammad Jamal Naser Chowdhury and Chairman of Muktijuddha Projanma Council Shahidul Islam Kabir in separate statements protested the cartoon on Prophet Mohammad (sm) by Swedish cartoonist and demanded withdrawal of Swedish embassy from Dhaka.
