কোরিয়ার কিউন হি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ক্যাম্পাসে প্রতিদিন রবীন্দ্রনাথকে দেখতে পাই৷এখানে পাথরে খোদাই করা রবীন্দ্রনাথের একটি প্রতিকৃতি রয়েছে। কোরিয়ানরা কেন রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরকে স্মরণ করেছে - এর পেছনে রয়েছে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ইতিহাস৷

কোরিয়া তখন জাপানের কলোনি৷ এখন যে জাপানকে আমরা দেখছি, তখনকার জাপান ছিল সম্পূর্ণ ভিন্ন৷ আসলে সব সাম্রাজ্যবাদীর চেহারাই এক৷ অত্যাচার আর নিগ্রহের শিকলে বন্দী ছিল কোরিয়া৷ ঠিক সেই একটা সময়ে রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর লিখলেন তার ছোট অথচ কালজয়ী কবিতা৷ তার কবিতাটি কোরিয়ার বিশেষত্ব তুলে ধরে বিশ্ববাসীর দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণে সমর্থ হয়েছিল৷ অনেকেই আগে মনে করতেন জাপান বা কোরিয়া একই জাতি৷ সংস্কৃতিও এক৷ এজন্য কোরিয়া শাসনের অধিকার রয়েছে জাপানের৷ অথচ কোরিয়ার শিল্প, সাহিত্য, ইতিহাস ও সংস্কৃতি যে আলাদা তা জানার সাথে সাথেই কোরিয়ার পক্ষে দাড়িয়েছিলেন রবীন্দ্রনাথ৷ সেই দুর্দিনের সমর্থন কোরিয়াবাসী ভুলতে পারেনি৷ কবিতাটি কোরিয়ানদের মনে স্থায়ী আবাস করে নিয়েছে। কবিতাটিকে তারা হাইস্কুলের পাঠ্যবইতে অন্তর্ভুক্ত করে নিয়েছিল। আমার বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ফিলোসপার'র চত্ত্বর, যা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ একটি স্থান, যার সৌন্দর্যের কারণে এই বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় স্বমহিমায় প্রসিদ্ধ, সেখানকার গেটেই স্থাপন করা হয়েছে রবীন্দ্রনাথের প্রতিকৃতি৷ সাথে তার কবিতা৷ আমার ক্যাম্পাসে আর কোন মহান ব্যক্তির বাণী এমন শ্রদ্ধার সাথে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ স্থানে শোভা পায়নি৷ তবে লাইব্রেরিটার নাম রবার্ট কেনেডি লাইব্রেরি৷ কেনেডির কিছু বাণী আছে, সেগুলো লাইব্রেরীর ভেতরে অথবা ভবনের ভেতরে স্থান পেয়েছে৷
যাই হোক প্রতিদিন ক্লাসে যেতে চোখে পড়ে রবীন্দ্রনাথ৷ রাজধানী সিউলেও স্থাপন করা হয়েছে রবীন্দ্রনাথের ভাস্কর্য৷ বাঙালি হিসেবে বিদেশ বিঁভূয়ে এর চেয়ে গর্বের কী আর থাকতে পারে৷
১৯২৯ সালে লেখা রবীন্দ্রনাথের এই সেই A Lamp-Light of the East কবিতা, যা কোরিয়ানরা এখনো স্মরণ করেন৷

In the golden age of Asia,
Korea was one of its lamp bearers,
And that lamp is waiting
to be lit once again,
For the illumination of the East.

রবীন্দ্রনাথের কথা সত্যি হয়েছে৷ দুর্বল একটা সিংহকে খাচায় আটকে শিকলে বেঁধে রাখলে সিংহ তার শক্তি ভুলে যায়৷ কোরিয়ার অবস্থাও ছিল সেরকম৷ কোরিয়া যে এশিয়ার আলোকবর্তিকা, কোরিয়া যে আসলে সিংহ, সেটি মনে করিয়ে দিয়েছিল রবীন্দ্রনাথের কবিতাটি৷ একারণে খুব অল্প সময়ের মধ্যেই একটা গরীব দেশের তকমা ফেলে দিয়ে উন্নত দেশের কাতারে দক্ষিণ কোরিয়া৷ স্বল্প সময়ে কোন জাতি এমন ম্যাজিক কোন কালেই দেখাতে পারেনি৷ এখন যে কোন বিষয়ে হিসেব করতে গেলে বিশ্বে শীর্ষোন্নত দশটি দেশের একটি কোরিয়া৷ কোন খাতে পিছিয়ে নেই৷ বিশ্বে চার নম্বর অর্থনীতির দেশ৷ জাপান বুঝতে পেরেছে কিছুদিনের মধ্যেই প্রযুক্তির দিক দিয়ে কোরিয়া তাদের পেছনে ফেলে দেবে৷ একারণে জাপান সম্প্রতি কোরিয়ার আর কোন প্রযুক্তি রপ্তানি করবেনা বলে ঘোষণা দিয়েছে৷ পাল্টা কোরিয়ারও জাপানের সাথে ব্যবসা বাণিজ্য করবেনা বলে ঘোষণা দিয়েছে৷ আমাদের কাছে চীনা, জাপানি বা কোরিয়ার লোকজন দেখতে একরকম হলেও এদের মধ্যে রয়েছে যোজন দূরত্ব৷

রবীন্দ্রনাথ সব বুঝে শুনে কোরিয়ার পক্ষে দাড়িয়েছিলেন৷

The portrait of Rabindranath Tagore, seen in this picture has been engraved on the stone behind me. I see this portrait every day in the campus of Kyung Hee University of South Korea. The question is why Koreans remember Rabindranath. There is an important history behind it.

Korea was then Japan's colony. The Japan, we know, was completely different. In fact, the faces of all imperialists are the same. Korea was imprisoned in the shackles of persecution. At that time, Rabindranath Tagore wrote his short but timely poem. His poem was able to attract the attention of the world by highlighting the Korean specialties. Previously, the world used to think Japanese and Koreans are the same race and their culture is one. That's why Japan has the right to rule over the Korea. But Rabindranath stood for Korea, knowing that Korean art, literature, history and culture were different. The Koreans could not forget the support of Rabindranath in that time of disaster. The poem has taken place in their hearts. They included this poem in the textbook of high school. The portrait of Rabindranath was depicted at the gate of my University at Philosopher's avenue, which is one of the important places of the University, and famous for its beauty. The poem is also written there with his picture. No other great person adorned the place with such respect like Rabindranath. However, the library was named after ex American President Mr. Kennedy. There are some sayings of Kennedy that have been found inside the library or inside the building.

However, I see Rabindranath every day while going to the class. Rabindranath sculpture also has been build in the capital Seoul. What can be more proud for a Bengali people than this in abroad like Korea!

This is the poem titled ''A Lamp-Light of the East'' written by Rabindranath in 1929, that Koreans still remember.

''In the golden age of Asia,
Korea was one of its lamp bearers,
And that lamp is waiting
to be lit once again,
For the illumination of the East.''

By the course of time, Rabindranath's words came true. When a weak lion is tied up in a cage, the lion forgets his strength. The situation of Korea was similar. But Rabindranath's poem reminded that Korea is actually a lion and a luminary in Asia. Korea realised their power. Therefore, South Korea is now in the list of top developed country, leaving the charecter of a poorer country within a short time. No nation has ever shown such magic. Korea is now one of the top ten countries in the world. No sector is left behind. Korea is the fourth economy in the world. Japan understands that within a few days Korea will overtake them in terms of technology. Thats why Japan has recently announced that it will not export any technology to Korea. In return, Korea also announced that it would not trade with Japan. We see Chinese, Japanese, or Korean people look alike, but they are all within a distance.

Rabindranath understood all and stood up for Korea.
