কিছু Phrase and Idioms . এগুলো বিভিন্ন প্রতিযোগিতামূলক পরীক্ষায় আসে। এছাড়া আপনার লেখাকে আরো শৈল্পিক করবে ।

1)Weary someone with something:to tire or bore someone with something.

Example: He wearied her with his constant requests. Please don't weary me with your complaints.

2)for a lark and on a lark: for a joke; as something done for fun.

Example: For a lark, I wore a clown's wig to school. On a lark, I skipped school and drove to the beach.

3)pick and mix: to combine things that are not similar, especially things that do not go well together

Example: Increasingly, students are being given total freedom to pick and mix different modules on their courses.

4)no love lost:no feelings of respect, admiration, or affection

Example: They had a curious relationship – there was no love lost there.
Usage notes: often used with between: There's no love lost between Morris and his publisher.


5)at full stretch : if someone or something is at full stretch, they are working as hard as possible

Example: The emergency services are working at full stretch to cope with the accident. When the plant is operating at full stretch it can employ 800 people

6)sell someone out and sell someone down the river:to betray someone; to reveal damaging information about someone.

Example:Bill told everything he knew about Bob, and that sold Bob down the river. You'll be sorry if you sell me out. Lefty sold out his friends, and we'll all soon be arrested.

7)Catch 22 also a Catch 22 situation:a situation where one thing must happen in order to cause another thing to happen, but because the first thing does not happen the second thing cannot happen
Usage notes: Catch 22 is the title of a book by Joseph Heller about the experiences of an American pilot.

Example:If you don't have a place to stay, you can't get a job and with no job, you can't get an apartment. It's a Catch 22 situation.

8)quicker than hell:Inf. very fast.

Example:You got over here quicker than hell. Be careful in the stock market. You can lose all your money quicker than hell.


9)be at sixes and sevens (informal):to be confused or badly organized.

Example: We were at sixes and sevens for about a week after we moved in.

10)in Dutch (with someone):in trouble with someone. (*Typically: be ~; get ~.)

Example: I'm in Dutch with my parents for my low grades. You're in Dutch quite often, it seems.

11)bolt out (of some place):to run out of some place very quickly.

Example: Frank bolted out of the room in a flash. I bolted out after him.

12)capitulate to someone or something:to surrender or submit to someone or something.

Example:The general finally capitulated to the enemy. I won't capitulate in this argument.

13)Let's rock and roll!: Let's get started!; Let's get moving!

Example:A: Everybody ready? B: Yeah. A: Good. Let's rock and roll!

14)turn back the clock :to make things the same as they were at an earlier time.

Example: I cannot vote for someone who promises to turn back the clock to better days because that's impossible.

Usage notes: sometimes used in the form turn the clock back

15)all over the place: in or to many different places

Example: here was blood all over the place. I ran all over the place looking for them.


16)buy into: (a) To acquire a stake or interest in.

Example: bought into a risky real estate venture.

(b) Informal To believe in, especially wholeheartedly or uncritically:

Example: couldn't buy into that brand of conservatism.

17)buy off: To bribe (an official, for example) in order to secure improper cooperation or gain exemption from a regulation or legal consequence.


18) buy out: To purchase the entire stock, business rights, or interests of.

19)buy up: To purchase all that is available of.


20) buy it slang: To be killed.

21) buy time:To increase the time available for a specific purpose:

Example: "A moderate recovery thus buys time for Congress and the Administration to whittle the deficit" (G. David Wallace).

22) buy the farm Slang: To die, especially suddenly or violently.



23)die off: [for a living thing] to perish one by one until there are no more.

Example: Most of the larger lizards died off eons ago. It would be really bad if all the owls died off. The cucumber blossoms all died off.


24)die of something and die from something: to perish from an injury or a particular disease.

Example:The doctors did all they could, but he finally died of cancer. What did it die from?




25) die away: to fade away.

Example:The sound of the waterfall finally died away. When the applause died away, the tenor sang an encore


26) die for someone or something : (a)to perish for the benefit or glory of someone or something.

Example: He said he was willing to die for his country. She would die for her child if necessary.


(b) to experience great physical or emotional desire for someone or something.

Example:He was just dying for Jane, but she would have nothing to do with him. Freddie was dying for a glass of water—he was so thirsty.


27)die by something:to perish by a particular cause or device. (Often refers to execution as a death sentence.)

Example: He died by electrocution. She was condemned to die by hanging.


28)die back :[for vegetation] to die back to the stems or roots.

Example:The hedge died back in the winter but regenerated leaves in the spring. This kind of grass dies back every year.



29) die a death (British) also die a natural death (American & Australian):to fail and end

Example: The principle of free health care for everyone is likely to die a death in the next ten years. The play, like so many others, died a natural death after only one week


30)die hard: if a habit, custom, or belief, dies hard, it takes a long time to change or end it (usually in present tenses)

After a successful 30-year career, he no longer has any need to work - but old habits die hard. These ancient traditions die hard in the isolated communities of rural China.


31)die in something :to perish in a particular calamity or accident.

They both died in an automobile accident. Wally did not want to die in the war.




32)die of a broken heart: to die of emotional distress.

I was not surprised to hear of her death. They say she died of a broken heart. In the movie, the heroine appeared to die of a broken heart, but the audience knew she was poisoned.


33)die of curiosity and die from curiosity: to experience a strongly felt need to know about something.


I was just dying of curiosity! I almost died from curiosity to finish the book and see how the mystery was solved.



34)die on someone: (a)[for a patient] to die under the care of someone.

Get that medicine over here fast, or this guy's gonna die on me. Come on, mister, don't die on me!

(b) [for something] to quit running for someone. My car died on me, and I couldn't get it started. My CD player died on me, and I had to listen to the radio.


35) die out : (a)[for a species or family] to perish totally because of the failure to produce offspring.

l am the last one in the family, so I guess our line will die out with me. The owls might die out if you ruin their nesting area.

(b)[for an idea, practice, style, etc.] to fade away through time.

That way of doing things died out a long time ago. It died out like the horse and buggy
