The snow cold Changchun became green in a blink. Blooming cherries, budding branches, loud advertisement for spring apparels, hot sales, and most importantly sellers on streets brought back both life and spring in this city. Who would say that months before it was all covered in thick-white snow.
It was just another evening of early May. I was walking along the Guilin Lu with a friend of mine. I personally love this road for its lively and vibrant nature. It allows everyone to home with something- from brand stores to street's stuff, Guilin Lu has everything.
No more Chinese or Korean restaurant, let's get something from the street! In the little chilly weather, with the bite of cold north-eastern wind, we wanted something from the fire. We found one man making chicken sticks on coal-fire, and he was wearing white round cap. I assumed that he must be a Chinese Muslim from a minority group. Then I saw one Arabic verse was written on the bill-board of his shop. Being a Muslim I was convinced to have food from there, as I had enough evidence to believe that the meat was halal. My friend doubted though, he said once he asked one guy who told him the meat was not halal.
I had an eye contact with the seller. He smiled at us, probably he understood that we were speaking over this issue. We went near to his shop, and he greeted us with salam. Then he asked if we were Muslim, and from which country we came from.
He said he too was a Muslim, but he did not want to sell his meat to us. As Muslims we should not eat those delicious looking chicken sticks, he said. We understood. The meat was not halal. What amazed me was his honesty. It was his business, he could easily sell food to us. We did not tell him at first place that we were Muslim or we were looking for halal food. He just understood. He respected our faith.
Muslims are minority people in China. In most cases they are poor, and victimized by atheism. They lack many opportunities of life. Being a minority is not easy, nowhere...leaving small profits in a small business is also difficult. There are people who make difficult choices to live an honest life with dignity. Hats off to them.
