Scientists at the University College of Dublin and several other research centers in Dublin, Ireland, compared a probiotic with placebo in women diagnosed with Gestational diabetes. A total of 149 participants were randomly assigned to receive either Lactobacillus salivarius or a placebo from the time Gestational diabetes was diagnosed during their pregnancy until delivery.
It was found both groups of women experienced a rise in total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein (LDL cholesterol), but the rise was significantly higher in the placebo group than in the probiotic group. No difference was seen in their blood sugar levels or their baby's birth weight. Women controlling their condition with diet and exercise lowered their blood sugar levels equally in both groups.
From this information it was concluded probiotics might be useful in minimizing the typical rise in total cholesterol and HDL seen near the end of pregnancy when Gestational diabetes has been diagnosed.
