The innovative venture of two youths at Shahjadpur Upazila here is saving lives of numerous wild birds of different species.
The two youths created a bird sanctuary in a vast area which has already drawn people's attention. At first, people termed their activities as madness, but in the course of time it drew huge appreciation.
The two youths are Mamun Biswas and Emon Sarker of Agnukali Village in Shajadpur Upazila of Sirajganj District. Their main aim is to expand the scope of the sanctuary to a great extent and to create awareness among people about its environmental
benefits.
Due to this wonderful innovative endeavour, the entire village remains filled with the quavering melody of different birds day and night.
The village Agunakali is inhabited by around 3000 people. They are much impressed by the endurance and hard labour of the two boys. To build the sanctuary, they fastened total 105 earthen jars on numerous tree
branches.
This creative effort is also going to cover neighbouring - Lisimpur, Raypara, Shikderpara, Madhyapara, Satbaria, Vennagachhi, Laxmipur and other 10 villages.
According to Mamun Biswas, the number of birds of different varieties is being reduced due to different factors like extinction of trees, food crisis, use of chemicals and pesticides in croplands, natural disasters, unplanned building construction and increased number of bird hunters. Referring to a publication of Bangladesh Asiatic Society, he said a large number of birds including heron, parrot, sand-piper, crane, vulture, magpie robin and 41 more species are facing extinction.
So, Mamun initiated the uncommon venture few months back and also engaged his friend Emon. Later, they fastened some earthen jars to the tree branches, and within few days they witnessed a number of birds started living in those nests. Encouraged by this, they started the journey.
Meanwhile, the youths, in collaboration with others, have formed an organisation 'The Bird Safety House' and many villagers have joined it.
The bird lovers are now involved in transforming the entire Shahjadpur Upazila into a network of bird sanctuaries. In this connection, they sought public-private patronisation from enthusiastic sections.
