It was wonderful to see that the Awami League lead government is finally putting together a welfare program for the poverty stricken people to put food on the table directly. Helping the poor's is the most satisfying feeling for a welfare government. And for a third world government policies like this must be the top priority.

Many Veteran Awami league supporters will tell that if you really want to understand Bogobondhu Seikh Mujibor Rahman and appreciate his life then prioritize the underprivileged. It is the starting point of following Mujib's footstep.

We all understand that winning an election and acquiring the right to govern is crucial. Since we have chosen a capitalist path to prosperity a centre left political party like Awami league had to make changes and compromise with the new ideas. It had to make room for people of different ideas and interests. However, the compromises must be reasonable. In accordance with the fundamental principles of the party and it's supporter base. This is of course a dilemma for Awami League. So far, the price tags for the compromises are so high that it is almost unacceptable for it's primary supporter base.

Awami League has always enjoyed a formidable command over the educated middle class of the country. People who are not directly dependable on the party for a livelihood. Rather support the party for the liberal ideas it represents. Till to date the educated middle class has played the most crucial role for Awami League's existence and considered as the primary supporter base of the party. Worryingly, it seems that the Awami league is losing that ground. Middle class is now more hesitant than ever to defend the government.

One doesn't need to dig deep to find an explanation of this worrying trend. The answer can be found analysing the behaviour of the new opportunist additions and sadly the rising voices of the party. Those who neither care nor understand the fundamental principles of Awami league. Those who do not understand that Awami League is an on-going conversation between the party voices and the people from all across the land. Between all ethnic groups, all religions, all backgrounds. No matter how small or irrelevant the issue is. No matter how little the group is. It is a conversation which is taking place in this land since 1949. Between parents, children, grandparents and grand children over society, role of religion, justice, freedom and expectations. A conversation passed through generations and driven by the educated middle class of the nation. And it has been hijacked. Over the last few years the conversation has taken a contrary new turn. The opportunists are entering the conversation even before finding out whether their values are compatible with the years old fundamental values of the party or not.

No one would ever argue that Awami League is not open. It is open but then again it is closed. It is closed to bigotry and hypocrisy. Closed to religious intolerance and political Islam. Or should I say It was closed.

Disappointingly, religion to be more specific Islam has now become the driving force of the party policy. Ignoring the primary supporters and fundamental secular values, Awami league has unleashed a communal force like Olama League. Made alliance with Islamist's parties. Nurturing a violent communal force like Hefajot e Islam.

Sunni Islam was always a domineering belief in our country. But the majority of our people lead by Awami league always opposed political use of religion. And it worked.

Once Awami League had a secular cause which is lost. Thus it loses it's most valuable supporters. The defenders of the party. The lost educated middle class support is proportional to Awami League's compromises with it's secular values. Can Awami League afford to continue losing it's primary base?
