Thousands of students, teachers, officials and employees of Jahangirnagar University (JU) formed a human chain in front the main entrance of the university on Thursday protesting the death threat to JU vice chancellor Prof Shariff Enamul Kabir.
Earlier, Prof Kabir on Tuesday night received a death threat from an anonymous mobile phone number while he was returning to the campus from Dhaka at about 9:30pm after attending a function. He filed a general diary with Ashulia police station seeking security.
Teachers, officials and employees on Wednesday announced demonstration and human chain programmes for Thursday protesting the threat.
After the human chain they held a protest rally at Amar Ekushey sculpture premises where JU pro-VC Prof Dr Mohammad Moniruzzam, Prof Dr Nasir Uddin, treasurer of JU, Prof Dr Nurul Alam, president of JU Teachers’ Association, among others, spoke.
Speakers demanded identification of the culprits immediately and their punishment and announced to go for tougher movement if their demands are not fulfilled.
