The government has decided to honour 50 distinguished foreign nationals including heads of states and governments and five international organizations, including ICJ, on the 40th anniversary of Independence.
On March 7, the cabinet approved the proposal after a national committee, headed by Foreign Minister Dipu Moni, finalized the draft list of the nominees, including the ICJ, a Geneva-based international organization.
The ICJ report published a biased and distorted report in June 1972 titled “The Event in East Pakistan 1971: A Legal Study hits at the very basis of Bangladesh.
The report said the sacrifices made by the people in 1971 and declaration of independence of Bangladesh by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibuir Rahman was not entitled in international law and it said such declaration of independence was illegal under international law.
These findings of the ICJ had effectively nullifying legitimacy of Bangladesh.
Moreover, the ICJ report unfairly equated crimes committed by the Pakistan occupation army and its local collaborators against the Bangalees with that of sufferings of the Biharis.
The ICJ report considered Bangladesh Liberation War as ‘civil war’ and the Bangalee freedom fighters as ‘insurgents.’
Although the report acknowledged that international crimes including Crimes of Genocide were committed in 1971 against Bangalee people, it was subsequently suggested in the same report that similar crimes were committed by Bangalees ‘insurgent forces’ against Biharis and other non-Bengalis.
The International Crimes Strategy Forum (ICSF), an independent global coalition of activists and experts, who are dedicated to the spirit of Bangladesh Liberation War, made an appeal to the government to review the ICJ nomination and delete it from the list of the honourees.
