Turkey Coup: Seikh Hasina Must Learn a Lesson From It

Apparently, Erdogan has survived a coup attempt which does not concern me at all. Because of his recent standing on Bangladeshi war crime trial and his fundamental political views I have a deep hate for him. However I was comparing the governance of AK party of Turkey and current Awami League government of Bangladesh lately. Sadly, I have noticed a similar style of governance between the two elected government of two different Muslim majority countries even though ideologically they are too different. AK Party is a right wing political movement capitalizes Muslim conservatism and Awami league is a center left secular political party.

Both Bangladeshi and Turkish democracy going through a difficult time and both of the system are effected by severe fundamental flaws which is worryingly visible.

Despite the geographical distances there are overwhelming similarity between the tho societies-

Majority Sunni Muslim population which is largely moderate yet for some reason influenced by conservative Muslim ideologies;
Tension between the Secular and Conservative elements of the society over the role of Islam in state policy and apparently conservative violence getting an upper hand over peaceful secular movement in both countries;
Rapidly growing economic growth and rise of the middle class driven by the largely young work force and failed somewhat negative government policy unable to keep up with the economic and social advancement;
Lack of democratic rights and rise of autocracy.

In the last few years Bangladesh and Turkey witnessed rise of two very popular and powerful elected officials. Recep Erodgan in Turkey who is also accused of fueling Islamic violence and Seikh Hasina in Bangladesh accused of not doing enough to confront Islamic conservatives. As a result both of the countries are paying a very high price and witnessing violent Islamic militancy.

Democracy as an idea flourished and cherished by the middle class- from their desire to be heard and to take part in policy making. Over the years the concept of a functioning democracy has evolved to a stage where just voting and electing a government is considered not enough. Now security, economy, happiness and individuality plays a part in defining democracy. Modern democracy has evolved to a point where it has become a pluralistic government system, it needs some assurance that a single powerful individual or some particular group won't be able to dominate the political landscape.

There is a dangerous similarity between Erdogan and current Awami League government- they showed a very little interest in strengthening the democratic institutions, instead they have a tendency to threaten and weakening the institutions which are considered pivotal for democratic advancement. From the policy initiatives it is apparent that the both governments have all their focus, all their expectations and agenda on one person. The policy initiatives have become so personalized that it shows every sign of existence of an extreme autocracy.

Bangladesh has a huge educated urban middle class, because of the success of the NGO movement it also has an established civil society and it is considered as one of the best performing developing economies of the world. Apparently, the current government has completely forgotten the growing middle class and their renewed expectations. This is 21st century. The use of internet and social media has completely changed the political landscape of the world. People now are not only concerned, they are also aware of the every government failure. They are thriving for reforms- freedom of the press, social justice, democratic rights to express their opinion, internet freedom, a vibrant justice system, democratic watch dogs, transparency. And apparently in the last few years the government has taken a stand against all those expectations. By doing so, they government actually pushed the middle class to a point where they lost respect for democracy. There are no urge to defend it. The people has lost their faith in democratic government so much that they are most likely to accept a more autocratic government in an event of a coup to over through the government.

After such lengthy period of democratic ruling it was unimaginable that there would be such a large scale military coup attempt in Turkey. Turkey's close ties with Europe, NATO and its pivotal role in world politics makes it almost unimaginable. Still it had happened and there is nothing to blame except Erdogan's autocratic rule. For the same reasons a coup could take place in Bangladesh too.

Erdogan has survived. The coup did not get international support- no one wanted to deal with a further destabilized Turkey due to its central role in war against IS and the embarrassment a military rule government could bring to Turkey's international partners like NATO. Erodgan also had his conservative Muslim supporter base who cares about nothing but Islam in his side.

Will it be same for Seikh Hasina? Will she get international support? Since 2013 the Awami league leaders have alienated the secularists of the country which is considered Awami League's traditional and core support group, will she get same immediate response from them? For years of deprivation of fundamental democratic rights and lack of participation and reflection of their opinion in state policy, will the people feel the urge to defend democracy?

Hope Seikh Hasina will learn a lesson from Turkey, make an attempt to engage with people and give our country back to us. Despite all her failures many of us still believes, she is our best hope and only she can salvage us from current autocracy because deep down she is still the same person we once believed in.
