মেরসি(Mersey) নদীবিধৌত ইংল্যান্ডের লিভারপুল শহর ষাটের দশকে বিশ্ববিখ্যাত হয়ে উথেছিচল রক মিউজিকের জনপ্রিয় ব্যান্ড বিটলস এর কারনে।এই সময়েই একদল কবি রক মিউজিক আর কবিতার মেলবন্ধন ঘটিয়ে সহজ,আবেগদীপ্ত ও হৃদয়গ্রাহী কবিতা নিয়ে ইংল্যান্ডের কাব্যমঞ্চে আবির্ভুত হলেন।তাদের বলা হোল “Liverpool Poets”। এই কবিরা একই সাথে গায়ক ও কবি। লিভারপুল কবিদের মধ্যে প্রধান তিনজন হলেনঃ Roger McGough, Brian Patten ও Adrian Henri। লিভারপুল কবিরা কবিতাকে সঙ্গীতের মতই জনপ্রিয় করে তুললেন। তারা গিটার বাজিয়ে বাজিয়ে কবিতা গাইলেন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ক্যম্পাসে ,ক্যাম্পাসে,ক্যাফেতে,পাবে.১৯৬৭ সালে এই তিনজন লিভারপুল কবিকে নিয়ে পেঙ্গুইন মডার্ন পোয়েট সিরিজের ১০ নম্বর এন্থলজিটি The Mersey Sound বার হওয়ার অল্প কিছুকালের মধ্যেই বিশ্বময় বিক্রি হোল প্রায় পাঁচ লক্ষ কপি। কবিতাসংকলন বিক্রির ইতিহাসে এটি বিশ্ব রেকর্ড।ইংল্যান্ডের লিভারপুল কবিরা একসময় বাংলাদেশে বিপুল জনপ্রিয় হয়েছিলেন।শামসুর রহমান, শহীদ কাদরী ,নির্মলেন্দু গুণ বিপুল আলোড়িত হয়েছিলেন এ কবি গোষ্ঠী দ্বারা। বিশেষত এড্রিয়েন হেনরির কবিতার শৈলী ও বিষয় প্রভাবিত করল তাদের। শহীদ কাদরীর ‘তোমাকে অভিবাদন প্রিয়তমা’( পরে কবীর সুমনের কণ্ঠে এ কবিতার সঙ্গীতরূপও জনপ্রিয় হয়েছে বিপুল)কবিতাটি রচিত হয়েছে এড্রিয়েন হেনরির “ Don’t Worry, Everything will be alright” কবিতার প্রত্যক্ষ প্রভাবে।বলা যায়, শহীদ কাদরীর কবিতাটি হেনরির কবিতার সরাসরি সৃষ্টিশীল বাংলা রূপান্তর।এড্রিয়েন হেনরির “ Without You” ও “ Love is” কবিতার শৈলী শামসুর রাহমান ব্যবহার করেছেন তার সুবিখ্যাত “ স্বাধীনতা তুমি” কবিতায়। নিরমলেন্দু গুনের বিপুল পাঠকপ্রিয় কবিতা “ তুমি চলে যাচ্ছ” কবিতাটি Brian Patten এর “Song of the Last Year’s Wife” এর সুর, স্বর ও আবেগ ও গতিময়তা দ্বারা অনুপ্রাণিত। লিভারপুল কবিদের মধ্যে সবচেয়ে গীতিময় ও সংরক্ত হলেন এই ব্রায়ান পাটেন। যাহোক, একটি কবিতার অনুপ্রেরণায় সময় ও ভূগোল নির্বিশেসে রচিত হতে পারে আরও অনেক কবিতা।এড্রিয়েন হেনরির ওই তিনটি কবিতা পাঠ করা যাক,যেগুলো অনুপ্রাণিত মুহুর্ত দিয়েছিল শহীদ কাদরী ও শামসুর রাহমানকে।

Without you Mothers wouldn't let their children play out after tea,
Without you every musician in the world would forget how to play the blues,
Without you Public Houses would be public again,
Without you the Sunday Times colour suppliment would come out in black-and-white,
Without you indifferent colonels would shrug their shoulders and press the button,
Without you they's stop changing the flowers in Piccadilly Gardens,
Without you Clark Kent would forget how to become Superman,
Without you Sunshine Breakfast would only consist of Cornflakes,
Without you there'd be no colour in Magic colouring books,
Without you Mahler's 8th would only be performed by street musicians in derelict houses,
Without you they'd forget to put the salt in every packet of crisps,
Without you it would be an offence punishable by a fine of up to £200 or two months' imprisonment to be found in possession of curry powder,
Without you riot police are massing in quiet sidestreets,
Without you all streets would be one-way the other way,
Without you there'd be no one to kiss goodnight when we quarrel,
Without you the first martian to land would turn round and go away again,
Without you they'd forget to change the weather,
Without you blind men would sell unlucky heather,
Without you there would be
no landscapes/no stations/no houses
no chipshops/no quiet villages/no seagulls
on beaches/no hopscotch on pavements/no night/no morning/
there'd be no city no country
