The blogs I previously wrote here were in Bangla. But this time I chose English because my topic today is about English and contrary to other global nations, how we abuse it.
Last year, I visited Thailand for a week. It was a family vacation. During our 7-day stay, we had a hard time communicating with the locals as the majority of Thai population can't speak/understand basic English. The ones who can have such grotesque accent; it doesn't make much difference. The funniest thing, as you may know, is the salesmen using calculators for bargaining. However, this was my 2nd visit. The 1st being over a decade ago. The changes and developments I witnessed this time were considerably higher.
How did a nation with such poor communication skills develop so much in such a short span of time?
Question remains.
We, on the other hand, laugh hard at the likes of Ananta Jalil for his accent.
But do you know the irony?
Most of these people wear masks while they're laughing and making fun of people like Jalil.
As the day ends, these individuals return to their homes, take the masks off and look at the mirror.
And what do they see?
They see the reflection of a being who has failed tremendously.
They know they can never match Jalil's humane sides despite being intellectually and linguistically superior to him.
Yes, English as a mean of communication is important.
But consciously avoiding that importance is okay too.
For instance, Pakistani cricketers are rather known for their naturally inherent talent than the prevalence of their inability in verbal English.
In my previous job, there was this guy whose productivity was substantially lower than the others.
Yet the boss liked him for his ability of English skills.
Also because he greased well. In English, of course.
Many-a-times, I impartially distinguished between Chinese, South Indian, Bangla and a few other languages as to which sounds the sweetest to ears; and I couldn't pick but Bangla.
But then you look around and you see how choosing a foreign language over the only globally regarded tongue these days is a trend we must follow.
The adulteration in local food products has duly spread into daily talks.
We drool over Ronaldo and Messi but we've to listen to them through a translator?!
