February 17, 1983. কেউ বলেন ৫০০০ আর কেউ বলেন ২০০০ লোক খুন হয়েছে যার প্রায় সবই শিশু ও মহিলা। এ হত্যা কান্ডের জন্য ভারত কাউকে একটি ফুলের আঁচড়ও দেয়নি। নিচের ইংরেজী উদৃতি প্রমান করে শিশুগুলো বাংলাদেশী। এর চেয়ে বর্বর হত্যা কান্ড হতে পারে? এর জন্য বর্বর অভিধা যথেষ্ঠ নয়। নিকৃষ্ট হিংস্র জানোয়ার ই কেবল এমন করতে পারে। ভারত যে কত বড় জানোয়ারের দেশ তা এ ছবি প্রমাণ করে। বাংলাদেশে কেউ কেউ ভারতকে আমাদের বন্ধু মনে করে। প্রত্যেককে এ ঘটনা জানিয়ে চোখে আঙ্গুল দিয়ে দেখিয়ে দিন যে ভারত কখনো আমাদের বন্ধু হতে পারে না।

From Wikipedia: On February 17, 1983 two truckload police contingents came to Borbori and assured the inhabitants that they are patrolling nearby and full security has been provided to them. Being assured of security by the security personnel, Bangladeshi Muslim residents of Nellie went to work outside as usual on February 18, 1983. At around 8:30 am, suddenly the village was attacked by mobs from three sides surrounding the villagers and pushing them towards river Kopili. People armed with sharp weapons, spears, and a few guns, advanced towards Nellie in an organized manner. The attackers encircled the whole village and left open the side that ends towards river Kopili. There were attackers in boats too. Killing started at around 9 am and continued till 3 pm. Most of the victims were women and children. The survivors were taken to Nagaon police station. Most of the survivors were put into Nellie camp at Nagaon and they returned to their village after 14 days upon restoration of normalcy. Police filed 688 criminal, of which 378 cases were closed due to "lack of evidence" and 310 cases were charge sheeted, and all these cases were dropped by Government as a part of Assam Accord and as a result not a single person got punishment.

It was a chill Friday of the year 1983 and 18th day of February with soft morning sunshine. Friday being an auspicious day for Islamic faith, the people of the village could have hardly imagined that the day would unfold the greatest ever tragedy in their life. Being a Muslim majority village, the people left for work early as they had to return for the afternoon Juma namaz. Yes-that’s how the day unfolded in Nellie, a small town in Nagoan district 40 km from the state capital Guwahati. In the next six hours, Nellie witnessed the worst ever preplanned genocide that shook the very secular structure of this great country. Official reports says 1819 lives, mostly women and children, were butchered however eyewitnesses account the toll to be around 5000.

Official report says Nellie massacre left 1819 people dead and several thousand others injured. Unofficial sources and people of Nellie believe that death toll could be around 5 thousand. In terms of brutality committed just in few hours, probably this is the highest figure of people killed with crude weapons.
