গানের জগতে 'বব মার্লে' নাম শোনেনি এমন মানুষ খুজে পাওয়া যাবে কিনা সন্দেহ। তৃতীয় বিশ্বের প্রতিবাদী কণ্ঠস্বর বব মার্লে। যার গানের মূল মন্ত্র ছিল 'মনুষ্যত্ব'। অধিকার বঞ্চিত মানুষদের নিয়ে কাজ করে গেছেন আজীবন। ইন্টারন্যাশনাল মিউজিকে Ska থেকে Contemporary reggae মিউজিকের এর জনক ধরা হয় তাকে। পৃথিবীর সব চাইতে সম্মানজনক Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award এবং Rock and Roll Hall of Fame এওয়ার্ডে ভূষিত।

১৯৭৭ সালে বব মার্লে ফুটবল খেলতে যেয়ে ডান পায়ের বুড় আঙ্গুলে হাল্কা আঘাত পেয়ে বসেন। কেন যেন ক্ষতটি না শুকিয়ে আরো বাড়তে থাকে। ডাক্তার পরীক্ষা করে সেটা ক্যান্সার (Malignant Melanoma) হিসাবে সনাক্ত করে। ডাক্তার পরামর্শ, রোগটি ছড়িয়ে পরার আগে সহজ চিকিৎসা হিসাবে আঙ্গুলটি কেটে ফেলতে হবে।
কিন্তু বব মার্লে ছিলেন Rastafari ধর্মের একনিষ্ঠ অনুসারী। সে ধর্মে মানুষের অঙ্গহানি করা মহাপাপ। সেটা যে কারনেই হোক না কেন।
ওল্ড টেস্টামেন্ট বাইবেলের একটি স্তবক Rastafari ধর্মকারীরা খুব গুরুত্ব সহকারে মেনে চলে:
They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in the flesh. [Leviticus 21:5]
- এই স্তবকের প্রথম অংশ Rastafari ধর্মে জটায়ু চুল রাখার নির্দেশিকা বহন করে। যা Dreadlocks স্টাইল নামে পরিচিত। এবং শেষ অংশে অঙ্গহানি না করার নিদের্শ যা সেই রিচুয়ালের অংশ হিসেবে ধরা হয়। অন্য একটি স্তবকে মানব দেহকে 'পবিত্র পূন্য স্থান' মনে করা হয়। অনেকের ধারনা সেই কারনেও বব মার্লে ছোট এই অপারেশন করতে চাননি।
বব মার্লের মৃত্যুর পর তার মেডিক্যাল রিপোর্ট কখনই জনসমুখে প্রকাশ করা হয়নি। তবু তার কাছের কিছু মানুষের কাছ থেকে জানা যায় মার্লে শেষ মুহূর্তে অপারেশন করতে রাজি হয়েছিল। কিন্তু তত দিনে অনেক দেরি হয়ে যায়। ডাক্তার পরীক্ষা করে দেখতে পায় ক্যান্সার সারা শরীরে ছড়িয়ে পরেছে। অপারেশন করলে অবস্থা আরো খারাপের দিকে যাবে। ১৯৮০ সালের দিকে বব মার্লের শরীর আরো অসুস্থ হয়ে পরে। নিউ ইয়র্কে কনসার্টে অংশ নিতে যেয়ে অজ্ঞান হয়ে পরে। তার শেষ কনসার্ট Pittsburgh এ ১৯৮০ সালেই। পরে সেই কনসার্ট রি-মাস্টারিং করে 'Bob Marley and the Wailers Live Forever' (ডিস্ক - ১ , ডিস্ক - ২ ) নামের ডাবল এ্যালবাম রিলিজ করা হয়।
জীবনের শেষ সময় Rastafari ধর্মের আধ্যাতিক কবিরাজ জার্মানে বসবাসরত Josef Issels কাছ থেকে চিকিৎসায় ব্যর্থ হয়ে ফিরে আসে। বব মার্লে বুঝতে পারে তাই তার শরীর আর সুস্থ হবার নয়। তাই মৃত্যুর শেষ মুহূর্তগুলো তার প্রিয় জন্মভূমি জ্যামাইকাতে কাটাতে চান। শেষ ইচ্ছা পূরণের জন্য প্লেনে রওয়ানাও দেয়। কিন্তু ভ্রমণের ধকলে তার শরীরের অবস্থা এতই নাজুক হয়ে পরে যে, পথিমধ্যে সেই প্লেন মায়ামিতে নেমে পরতে হয়। সেখানে ১৯৮১ সালের এগারোই মে হাসপাতালে মৃত্যুবরণ করেন। মৃত্যুকালে বব মার্লের বয়স ছিল মাত্র ছত্রিশ বছর। পুত্র Ziggy Marley কে উদ্দেশ্য করে বব মার্লের উচ্চারিত শেষ লাইনটি ছিল,
"Money can't buy life."
